 ----------------

This composite recording of the Piano Concertos 1 - 5 by Ludwig van Beethoven, with Michael Roll and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Howard Shelley, caused great enthusiasm. Being compared with Brendel, Pollini, Barenboim, Perahia and Arrau he achieved his rightful place among the outstanding interpretors of these works. This recording got amongst others the mention "Editor‘s Choice" of the renowned trade magazine Gramophone.
Ludwig van Beethoven’s piano concertos belong to the most outstanding compositions of the outgoing 18th and commencing 19th centuries and demonstrate the start of the period change from Viennese classicism to romanticism.

Although the two early works Piano Concerto No. 1 in C major, op. 15 (1795-1801) and No. 2 in B-flat major, op. 19 (1788-1801) were both still orientated on role models from Viennese classicism, they already boasted elements of romanticism. Piano Concerto No. 3 in C minor, op. 37 (1800-1803) was to remain the only piano concerto written by Beethoven in a minor key - and was also the first to display the symphonic characteristics that the composer enlarged upon in Piano Concerto No. 4 in G major, op. 58 (1804-1807) and No. 5 in E-flat major, op. 73 (1809). He paved the way for the symphonic piano concerto style of a Johannes Brahms, among others, with these last two concertos and these works belong to his most important piano concertos. Beethoven only wrote one work for more than one solo instrument; his so-called Triple Concerto for violin, cello and piano was written in 1803.

These recordings of Beethoven’s Piano Concertos were made by that most renowned British pianist Michael Roll and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra (conducted by Howard Shelley) in 1995 and have been highly praised by critics. Jean-Jacques Kantorow (violin) and Raphael Wallfisch (cello) play the other solo parts in the Triple Concerto.

Nu er det så nemt at vælge en af snob versionerne med nogle store kendte navne. Men man bliver tit snydt. For ikke alle er i den samme klasse som denne her udgave. Faktisk hører denne samling af Beethovens klaverkoncerter til blandt mine absolutte favoritter. Anbefales ubetinget.
