He was a child prodigy who wrote his first pieces when he was four years old, and when he was twelve, he had already written several major works. He was one of the most significant composers of the 20th century. He was versatile and often had a pedagogical purposeful production. In his work as a pianist and conductor, and his leadership of the annual music festivals in Aldeburgh, he was a major influence on English music scene.
The time during the 2nd World War I spent Britten in the U.S. and Canada together with his friend Peter Pears, who was to become a lifelong companion. Britten's pacifism expressed in works such as 'War Requiem' from 1945.
During the 40s began Britten writing operas. Due to small budgets, it was often the smaller chamber operas. Here came his abilities for instrumentation of small farms into its own. Some of these operas such as 'Albert Herring' and 'Tje Turn of the Screw' is played often.
The breakthrough came in 1946 with the great opera 'Peter Grimes', which signaled a renaissance for the English opera. Since then works such as 'Midsummer Nights Dream' and 'Death in Venice' secured him lasting success on the opera stage.
In 1948 he founded together with Pears, Aldenburgh festival where many of his works premiered. His highly valued work 'Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra' widespread familiarity with classical music.
