Janet Baker was born in 1933, is an English singer (mezzo-soprano), known from operas, concerts and lieder evenings.
She has mainly sung in Baroque operas, in early Italian operas as well as in Britten and Elgar's works.
In his career from the 50s to the 80s she enjoyed great recognition as an accomplished opera singer with a talent for the dramatic. In particular, her portrayal of Dido, the heroine of Berlioz's masterpiece Les Troyens, created a stir. As a concert singer known Baker for his interpretations of Mahler and Elgar.
In 1982, Baker pulled back after performances of Mary Stuart at the English National Opera and of Gluck's Orpheus in Glyndebourne. She published her memoirs, Full Circle, in 1982.
She has received numerous awards, including Sonning Music Prize in 1979. Baker was also Dame Commander of the British Empire in 1976 and a member of the Companions of Honour in 1994.
