Richard Alan Bonynge (born September 29, 1930 in Sydney) is an Australian conductor.
Bonynge accompanied his cousin, who was a color soprano, studied piano play and appeared in public. At a concert in the late 1940s, he met his later wife, Joan Sutherland. Bonynge left Australia in 1950 to continue his studies at the Royal College of Music in London. He became interested in working with Joan Sutherland, who arrived the following year. They were married in 1954.
After Sutherland's international breakthrough in 1959, in the mid-1960s, they decided to work together as a singer and conductor; first at concert performances since opera performances and recordings. Bonynges debut as a conductor took place in May 1962, when at a concert with Sutherland he had to replace the conductor who had fallen ill. Joan Sutherland was already a big star, while Bonynge was an unknown and inexperienced conductor. He was therefore greeted with much criticism and condescension. Through his work, he convinced the audience and professionals about his talent.
From 1960 to today, Richard Bonynge has developed into one of the world's most prestigious and significant conductors and expert in belcanto and the French opera repertoire. He paved the way for forgotten works by Rossini, Bellini, Donizetti, Massenet and others. Together with his wife he played such rare works as Esclarmonde (Massenet), Le Roi de Lahore (Massenet), Semiramide (Meyerbeer). His discography contains more than 50 opera recordings, ballet music and solo recordings with singers
