In 1929, he was educated at the newly established American Conservatory in Paris; Here he received strong impression of Fauré, Prokofiev and Stravinsky especially if irregular rhythms traced in his first major work - the ballet music Grohg from 1922-25).
He wrote incidental music, three symphonies, piano variations and a number of ballet scores, which together with his film music made him America's most performed composer. In 1950 he composed for the first time a piano quartet.
