First and foremost, César Franck arguably the most important composer of organ music since Johann Sebastian Bach, but in addition he has also written major orchestral and chamber music.
Born in Belgium, but lived most of his life in France. His music was rooted in a rich tradition associated with Beethoven, Bach, Liszt and Wagner. His harmony is one of today's most distinctive, it formed the basis for the study of harmonious alteration. His production is often shared in 3 periods. While he was a concert pianist, he wrote a number of smaller works for piano. From 1850, where he was organist followed some religious works, fairs, oratorios and organ works. Of these finds are 12 larger size works in 3 periods, 1862 (opus 16 to 21) including "Grande Pièce Symphonique, three works from the period around 1878, and the crowning glory - the three organ chorales from 1890, which was his swan song in the composition of the organ as an instrument. His most important works he wrote after 1880 in his years as konservatorielærer. Has composed: 3 operas, Symphony in d minor (1888), 3 symphonic poems: Redemption, Le chasseur maudit, Les Djinns. symphonic variations for piano and orchestra (1885), 2 fairs, Panis angelicus, Sonata for violin and piano (1886).
