Niels W. Gade had his breakthrough as a composer as 24-year-old in 1841 with fantasy-overture Echoes of Ossian.
His Symphony No. 1 In Sjølunds brave Deletes was performed by Felix Mendelssohn with Gewandhausorkestret in Leipzig. It was so successful that Mendelssohn offered him to become his assistant. He settled in the city and quickly became a big name in Germany. He was a personal friend of Robert Schumann, Liszt and Wagner. By Mendelssohn's death in 1847 took over the street his position as head of the orchestra. At the time, Street become world famous
