Christoph Willibald Gluck (July 2, 1714 - November 15, 1787) was a German composer. Gluck made his debut as an opera composer in Italy, where he had been schooled by Giovanni Battista Sammartini. He then traveled around Europe as a conductor in an opera troupe and was eg to Copenhagen.
In the 1750s, he was engaged as an opera composer in Vienna. Here he began with his librettist, Ranieri Calzabigi, a reform program of the serious opera genre, opera seria - a genre that increasingly exposed to criticism and was losing popularity in favor of competing genres such as opera buffa and the German and Viennese Singspiel. In the 1770s stayed Gluck in periods in Paris, where he adapted his operas of the French scene, and wrote new operas as Iphigenia in Aulis (1774), Armide (1777) and Iphigenia in Tauris (1779).
Gluck composed more than 30 operas, seven last was "reform operas", all written on subjects from Greek mythology; the best known is Orpheus and Eurydice. His operas made him an admired composer throughout Europe.
