Jacques Offenbach (actually Jakob Eberst, June 20, 1819 in Cologne - October 5, 1880 in Paris) was a German-born French composer. He was the son of a cantor at a synagogue in Cologne, but traveled to Paris and was trained as a cellist at the conservatory. He was in Paris and was eventually successful as a composer of operettas, including Orpheus in the Underworld. His principal work is the opera Tales of Hoffmann, which he did not manage to make finished before his death.
The name Offenbach he takes after his father's birthplace, Offenbach am Main in Germany. After 10 years as a cello virtuoso, turned Offenbach himself from what he really interested in, the music scene. He wrote tunes for a variety of songs and nearly 100 operettas. Many of these one-act plays was small, and they were almost all of satire.
