Béla Bartók (25 March 1881 Nagyszentmiklós - September 26, 1945, New York) was a Hungarian composer, music ethnologist and pianist. Bartók is one of the key figures in 20th-century classical music. In particular, considered his string quartets to be the best that has been written since Beethoven. Bartok studied with Zolthán Kodály, the Hungarian, Slovak and Romanian - even the North African folk music and created an invaluable collection of works based on the popular music. His works have a huge range from large orchestral works for small naive pieces originally intended to piano schools for children, for example, For Children (Gyermekeknek (Sz. 42, BB 53) and Microcosm, where he has been based on the popular tone and especially rhythm. These works are nevertheless included in the major virtuosers repertoires, not least for the sake of the music educational value of the pieces.
Bartók came under the influence of Debussy and was combined with research into folk music inspired to relate freer to tonality. But even if it was more accentuated after meeting with Stravinsky and Schoenberg, it was mainly the rhythm and harmonic aspects, which put the said mark on his music. You can meet an essence of his musical expression in Music for string instruments, percussion and celesta with the powerful rhythm and the contrasting tone painting with dissonant sound processing.
