Mstislav Rostropovich, 27 March 1927 - April 27, 2007) was a Russian cellist and conductor. He was married to the soprano Galina Vishnevskaya. He was widely considered to have been the greatest cellist in the second half of the 20th century, and one of the greatest of all time. In addition to his unique interpretations and technique, he was known for his courageous performance of new works, which extended the cello repertoire more than any cellist before or since. He first built more than 100 different works.
He was internationally recognized as a staunch advocate of human rights, and in 1974 was awarded the annual Award of the International League for Human Rights.
