Modest Mussorgsky (21 March 1839 - 28 March 1881) was a Russian composer and pianist.
Modest Mussorgskys musical training was deficient, and his problems with alcohol contributed to some projects were never finished. But his originality has given him a prominent place among Russian composers.
His principal work is probably the opera Boris Godunov; but perhaps did Mussorgsky his best in his songs and in the piano work Pictures at an Exhibition. It was inspired by a memorial exhibition of the painter Victor Hartmann, Mussorgskys friend. Contemporaries was not interested in the piano work. Only then Maurice Ravel made an orchestral version was created attention for the work. Later also Dmitri Shostakovich made an orchestral adaptation.
