Richard Wagner (1813-1883) was a German composer, conductor, theorist and writer. He is primarily known for his operas (or music dramas as he later called them). His works especially from the late period is characterized by counterpoint, rich harmonies and orchestration, and a well-developed use of leitmotifs: musical themes associated with specific people, places or events in the opera.
Wagner's chromatic musical language came the development of European classical music forestalled. He contributed to the development of music with his idea of the total work of art or entity artwork (das Gesamtkunstwerk), which reached its peak in the monumental tetralogy, Der Ring des Nibelungen (The Ring des Nibelungen) from 1876. His use of leitmotifs exercised a considerable influence on film music in the 20th century. Wagner was a controversial figure, both for his musical and dramatic contribution and for its anti-Semitic and political affiliations.
