    Niels Viggo Bentzon was educated pianist, but as a composer he was self-taught, and his music pondered often in his excellent improvisation talent to such a degree that many of the compositions, at least piano works can be characterized as written improvisations. Ask basis is neoklassikken, inspired by Paul Hindemith, Brahms, Bartók, Carl Nielsen and slightly older contemporary Danish composers such as Franz Syberg and cousin Jørgen Bentzon. Later on, impressions from Britten, Schoenberg, Alban Berg and Igor Stravinsky to. In the period around 1950, he spent some extent the so-called metamorphosis technique.

    Bentzon composed about 620 works, 60 orchestral works, chamber music works 120, 30 organ and vocal works, ballets, solo concerts, background music for radio, film and television as well as operas Faust III (1964) and machine (1973). One of his best-known works are The Tempered Piano, inspired by Bach, consisting of 12 sessions every 24 Preludes and Fugues 24, a total of 576 piano pieces.
