Karl Böhm (1894-1981) was an Austrian conductor who particularly has become known as an outstanding interpreter of the works of Mozart, Wagner and Richard Strauss.
He was employed as an opera conductor at the Hamburg Opera in 1931-34 and experienced in the years 1934-42 a gloss period as head of the opera in Dresden, where he premiered several works by his friend Richard Strauss, including opera Daphne (1938). Memorable are his performances of Wagner's opera Tristan and Isolde at the Festival in Bayreuth in 1962-70. He recorded all of his favorite works on the gramophone, including three versions of Mozart's Cosi fan tutte and Die Zauberflöte and on its Executive he abstained from all romantic emotionalism and cultivated a clear, direct and energetic style. His distinctive sound processing and dynamic consciousness made him one of the 20th century's greatest conductors.
