    Niels Wilhelm Gade (22 February 1817 - 21 December 1890), in Denmark usually called Niels W. Gade was a Danish composer and conductor.

    For more than forty years was Street the dominant figure in Danish music scene. His most famous work is Elverskud (ballad for soloists, choir and orchestra).

    Niels W. Gade had his breakthrough as a composer as 24-year-old in 1841 with fantasy-overture Echoes of Ossian.

    His Symphony No. 1 In Sjølunds brave Deletes was performed by Felix Mendelssohn with Gewandhausorkestret in Leipzig. It was so successful that Mendelssohn offered him to become his assistant. He settled in the city and quickly became a big name in Germany. He was a personal friend of Robert Schumann, Liszt and Wagner.     George Gershwin (September 26, 1898 - July 11, 1937) was an American composer. His most famous opera Porgy and Bess, and was also a very effective composer of musicals, operettas and orchestral music (Rhapsody in Blue, An American in Paris). He composed also many songs that have become an integral part of the jazz repertoire and recorded by such Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday and many others. He got his first hit with Swanee, when he was 19 years old.

    Alexander Glazunov (1865 - 1936) was a Russian composer.

    Glazunov was equipped with an unusually safe ear and an amazing musical memory. He composed as early as 11-years-old. In 1879 Balakirev recommended him to seek lessons from Rimsky-Korsakov, and he developed with his words, not from day to day, but from hour to hour. The 16-year-olds First Symphony was premiered by Balakirev 29th marts 1882

    He composed 8 symphonies, which earned him the designation "the Russian Brahms". Glazunovs violin concerto from 1904 is now his most performed work. In 1934 he wrote his first saxophone concerto.

  • Gluck, CD

    Christoph Willibald Gluck (July 2, 1714 - November 15, 1787) was a German composer. Gluck made his debut as an opera composer in Italy, where he had been schooled by Giovanni Battista Sammartini. He then traveled around Europe as a conductor in an opera troupe and was eg to Copenhagen.

    In the 1750s, he was engaged as an opera composer in Vienna. Here he began with his librettist, Ranieri Calzabigi, a reform program of the serious opera genre, opera seria - a genre that increasingly exposed to criticism and was losing popularity in favor of competing genres such as opera buffa and the German and Viennese Singspiel. In the 1770s stayed Gluck in periods in Paris, where he adapted his operas of the French scene, and wrote new operas as Iphigenia in Aulis (1774), Armide (1777) and Iphigenia in Tauris (1779).

    Gluck composed more than 30 operas, seven last was "reform operas", all written on subjects from Greek mythology; the best known is Orpheus and Eurydice. His operas made him an admired composer throughout Europe.

    Edvard Grieg (15 June 1843 - 4 September 1907) is the largest Norwegian composer and therefor an accomplished pianist. He is one of the few Nordic composers who have achieved world fame. Among his best-known compositions are music to Henrik Ibsen's Peer Gynt.

    Edvard Grieg was married to his cousin Nina Grieg, the famous concert pianist. He composed, inter alia, his piano concerto during a holiday with his in-laws, who lived in Soelleroed. Another of his popular works "Wedding Day at Troldhaugen" he wrote in 1892 to his wife as the couple celebrated their silver wedding in their home Troldhaugen. In the evening sat Grieg down at the piano and played this tribute to his marriage.
